Surveys about Optics and Photonics in Poland

Summary of the survey to assess the training needs for the optics and photonics sector in Poland

In Poland we have localised 40 enterprises in optoelectronic sector, including sales representatives. Only two of them furnished us with filled polls. From the other companies we have received information by inquiring them by phone.

There are no large companies in this sector. Majority of medium companies (e.g. COBRABID – 35 employees, Institute of Applied Optics – 50 employees) are owned by the State. Private companies are small: 2-5 people of permanent staff.

In the state-owned companies an average age of employees is over 50 and the number of engineers is twice that of technicians. In private companies this relation is similar but the staff is younger. There are no increasing trends in recruitment. The only ongoing recruitment operations are those to recruit specialists in fine opto-mechanics.

Other sectors (medicine, biology) would like to employ opticians experienced in biomedical imaging (laser scanning confocal microscopy, optical coherence tomography, imaging cytometry etc.) but such specialist are not trained in Poland yet.

According to the optoelectronic community opinion a remedy for this situation is a change of the governmental policy about the RDT sector and re-establishing a proper rank of physics and mathematics in secondary school curricula.
